Figure 1
Schematic of PDT-/SDT-based nano-strategies applied in RA treatment. The mechanism of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is to leverage the cellular level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), a series of highly reactive and cytotoxic molecules, including singlet oxygen and free radicals. The produced ROS can induce apoptosis and necrosis of inflammatory cells of RA. The figure was created with BioRender.com."
Figure 3
Schematic of synergistic therapy of PDT, PTT, hypoxia-induced chemotherapy, and gene silencing for treating RA. Li et al. developed mesoporous silica nanoparticles conjugated with photosensitizer for photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT), hypoxia-activated prodrug Tirapazamine (TPZ), and siRNA for anti-apoptotic protein. TPZ was activated upon the oxygen depletion of PDT. The design for the multifunctional nanosystem successfully performed a synergistic PDT, PTT, hypoxia-induced chemotherapy, and gene silencing for RA treatment [29]."
